This training will bring child welfare, advocacy, law enforcement, behavioral health and victim services managers, staff and volunteers together to recognize that vicarious trauma is an occupational challenge in the field of victim services and that working with victims of violence and trauma can put individuals and organizations at risk for a range of negative consequences. The training will approach vicarious trauma in the workplace as a risk management issue where organizations providing services to a high level of trauma victims have a practical and ethical responsibility to address occupational toxic stress.
The goal will be for participants and organizations to become vicarious trauma-informed. A vicarious trauma-informed organization recognizes the toll on providers that work with a high number of trauma victims and assumes the responsibility for proactively addressing the impact of vicarious trauma through policies, procedures, practices, and programs.
Purpose: To provide education and resources for child and victim-serving agencies, leadership, front-line staff, and volunteers, about how vicarious trauma plays a major role in service delivery and organizational conditions. Information will be shared about how organizations and multidisciplinary teams can create a culture of safety where values, attitudes and behaviors support a psychologically safe and engaged workforce. Participants will learn the importance of developing policies, procedures and practices to create a vicarious-trauma informed workplace.
Target Audience: Board Chairs, Executive Directors, Front-Line Service Workers and Volunteers from the fields of Advocacy, Juvenile Justice, Law Enforcement, Child Welfare, and Behavioral Health.
