The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce “Wellness as a Survival Mechanism”.
Stress-management provided us with the tools we needed when we were already stressed but did not help us to keep from getting stressed. Self-care was introduced to help us prepare for stressful situations but focused primarily on the body’s response to stress. We recognized that our perceptions, the way we think, our goals and expectations also create stress, and the concept of Resiliency was developed to address this. Now, we recognize that stress and trauma can occur in any aspect of our lives, and our best preparation for these challenges is met in the concept of Wellness. Wellness draws on the previous modalities, knowledge of the body-brain connection, and the ability to live life centered on wellbeing.
This presentation begins with basic information about Traumatic Response and Secondary Trauma, and their physical and mental impact on the professional working with trauma and trauma victims. It also highlights the importance of the experiences the worker is bringing to their work; levels of empathy; and how the brain is wired to respond to trauma. Techniques to help mitigate the traumatic response of the body, brain and emotion are explained. Finally, this course will assist the participants to create a personal wellness plan.
